What distinguishes Joice from eg Skype?

posted Mar 2, 2009 1:01 AM by Emmanuel Frécon   [ updated Mar 2, 2009 1:06 AM ]

Joice is as simple as it can get, you do not need to have any experience in using a computer to use Joice. Using our auto-answer mode, you do not even need to reach out for the buttons on the JoiceBox to answer your dearest.

From a technological stand point, Skype is prominent. But opting for Skype locks you down to a single service and single vendor. Joice is based on an open standard for VoIP called SIP, which guarantees continuity and interoperability with other similar products, when such will exist.

Does Joice work with mobile broadband?

posted Mar 2, 2009 12:02 AM by Emmanuel Frécon   [ updated Mar 2, 2009 5:50 AM ]

You can not connect BlackBox directly to a mobile broadband USB dongle. However, we have had success connecting the box to a broadband 3G/wifi router such as models from Dovado or D-Link. This is something that we recommend to experiment with since it is highly dependent on coverage and bandwith available at the time you will be using the box.

You can also Joice via your laptop. This will usually be with degraded sound and picture quality when mobile broadband is not yet capable of 400 kbit/s both ways.

Do you need broadband to use Joice?

Yes, you need a broadband connection. Many broadband connection are asymmetric, i.e. you can receive more data than you can send. As opposed to web surfing or reading email, Joice typically requires to be able to receive as much as to send data. The important figure for your broadband connection is then the upstream bandwidth. Joice requires 256 kbit/s upstream, you usually get this rate when subscribing form 2Mbit/s downstream broadband connections.
