Box Web Manual

The few settings that control the behaviour of your JoiceKit together with the address book that it shows in the form of a carousel on the TV screen are controlled from a web site. You can access this web site at any time, from wherever you are in order to make necessary modifications. Settings are automatically downloaded to the box, usually as soon as they are made. Consequently, you should be able to administrate a JoiceKit from a remote location. In addition to settings and address book, the web site provides a way to quickly assess the well-functioning of a JoiceKit so that you will be able to diagnose common problems from the comfort of your computer.

There are two different types of web interfaces: the richer one is meant for controlling the settings of JoiceKit users, i.e. elderly relatives, while the simpler one is meant to controlling the settings for PC users. JoiceKit users have a yellow background, PC users have a blue-grey background, so that it should always be easy to make the difference and know which type of user you are handling. Typically, there are very few settings for PC users and you will change these very seldom. There are more settings for JoiceKit users, so you are likely to modify these a bit more often.

This document gives an overview of what settings are available for JoiceKit users and how to use the web site. In a number of screenshots, red rectangles and red circles are used to highlight zones of interest on the screen. These focus zones are not part of the web site, they are part of the manual. At any time, when using the web site, hoovering with your mouse on top of fields and buttons will provide you with contextual help.

Logging in

You can access the settings on the web site at all times and from all computers with access to Internet and a browser, at the following address: https://settings.myjoice.com/. You will be welcomed by the following screen (picture below). Enter your username (usually in the form <firstname>.<lastname>, with only English characters) and your web password. Note that names and password are case sensitive! Click on the "login" arrow to the right.

The login screen from which you can enter the site for controlling your settings. Enter your username and your password in the fields marked in the picture above.

An error will appear if you are trying to login with the wrong username or password.

If you have lost your password, click on "lost your password" on the main login page and enter your user name as shown above. A new password will be sent to the email address that you associated to the account. For security reasons, the email address is never shown. Contact us if you cannot remember which email address you associated to the account or if you do not have access to that account anymore.

Once you have logged into the site, you will be kept logged in from the computer and browser that you have used for a long period of time. This means that you will have to pay particular attention to logging off the site if you wanted to access and modify the settings from an unsecure machine, such as from another place, a computer you borrow or an Internet café.

The first time you log in onto the site, you might be requested to change the temporary password that was sent to you to something more sensible and something that you might remember better.

On password recovery or the first time you login, you will be requested to enter a new password. Try picking a strong password as explained below. To the right, there is a password strength meter that will dynamically reflect how good a password you are choosing.

A strong password is a password that meets the following guidelines. While it is not always possible to follow all these rules, try to apply them to your best in order to increase security.

  • Contain both uppercase and lowercase letters.
  • Contain numbers.
  • Contain symbols, such as ` ! " ? $ ? % ^ & * ( ) _ - + = { [ } ] : ; @ ' ~ # | \ < , > . ? /
  • Not resemble any of your previous passwords.
  • Not be your name, your friend's or family member's name, or your login.
  • Not be a dictionary word or common name.
It is never a good idea to use the same password for all sites and computers that you use, or for groups of such. If you have a hard time remembering all your passwords, consider taking notes or storing them using software like password safe, perhaps in combination with a USB memory stick or similar.

First Time Wizard

The first time you log in, you will automatically run through a setup wizard. This wizard can be accessed later on if necessary. The wizard will ask you for a small number of personal details.

On the first screen of the wizard, be sure to set a nickname. Your nickname will be shown to other JoiceKit and PC users in various places, for example in their address book on the TV screen or when searching for existing contacts.

To set an address is important since it will help other users of the system to differentiate people with similar names when looking for you or adding you to their contacts.

The image will be seen by other Joicers that have added you to your contacts. You choose the picture from a location on your hard drive using the "browse" button. If you do not have a picture at hand, you can pick one from our gallery.

Be sure to note down the so-called SIP name, this information will be essential when you want to call a JoiceKit from all relatives softphones. See the softphone manual for more information.

Main screen

Apart from the first time, whenever you log into the site, you will arrive at the main screen. This screen is the hub of all settings that are available for Joice user accounts. You can re-run the first-time wizard at any time by choosing the icon with a star, if you wish to.

The Joice administration main screen from which you will be able to modify the profile of the JoiceKit user account, add and remove contacts and modify some settings.

Profile

In the profile section of the site, you can change details for the Joice account, including how other JoiceKit or PC users will be able to contact that person and a number of security settings. The profile and picture details found at the profile page are the same as the first-time wizard and are already set if you have done the first-time wizard.

Inbound call settings

In this section, you can describe how other JoiceKit users that have added the JoiceKit user whom you are administrating as a contact will be able to call. Currently, you should probably let it as it is. If you wished to modify those settings, a description is provided in the softphone web manual.

Security settings

In this section, you can administrate security settings. You can hide a JoiceKit user from searches so that other users of the Joice system will not be able to search this user to add him/her to their contacts. Note that they will still be able to add the JoiceKit user that you are administrating if they know his/her exact user name.

Administrating Contacts

In the contacts section of the site, you can add and remove contacts to a JoiceKit user account. These settings are automatically forwarded to the JoiceKit being administered, sometimes with a slight delay. Be sure to wait at least one hour before contacting support if you encountered problems.

The main contact screen shows the list of contacts that are currently available to a given JoiceKit. Contacts are listed in the same order as on the TV screen to which the JoiceKit is connected. Only three contacts are shown at a time, but you should be able to navigate the list using the arrows to the left and right of the web page or using the scroll wheel on your mouse. The "add user" icon is used to add contacts, see below.

Every existing contact has a menu of icons that will appear when you hoover the mouse pointer over the picture representing the contact in the list. Clicking on these icon will perform the operations shown in the picture above. To edit contact information, you can also simply click on the image.

Escalation

Apart from a few details such as an address and a name, contacts in the Joice account are particular in the sense that they are not represented by a single or loose set of telephone numbers, rather they are represented by a chain of telephone numbers and Internet softphone addresses. This chain is called the escalation list and can be thought of as a call forwarding chain. The idea is that when trying to contact a given person, a JoiceKit will first try to contact the person at a known Internet softphone address (to benefit from video facilities, among other things) but will then contact a number of other telephone numbers, in order, to try getting in touch with that person. The system takes care of all redirections itself, for maximum user experience.

In addition to this chain of calls, you can tag numbers with a so-called type to make them more recognisable. Types are free-form text, which will enable you to describe numbers by their description and location, such as summerhouse or cottage.

Adding Contacts

To add a contact, you should click on the "+" grey icon at the bottom of the web page (see above). This will overlay a window via which you will be able to quickly add a contact. There are two sorts of contacts:
  1. myJoice users, such as other JoiceKit users, relatives that already have an account or other acquaintances. Since these contacts already are known to myJoice, they already have an account and they already have entered their personal details.
  2. Users outside of the Joice system.

myJoice users, other Joicers

To add a Joice user, add part of his/her name/surname and click on the search icon, or enter his/her full username and click on the add icon. When searching for existing users, a list of all matching users will be shown to you and you will be able to add the one that really is the person who you are looking for (there might be more than one person with the same name). Note that users are allowed to hide themselves from searches, in which case they will not appear in this list and you will have to contact them separately to get their exact user name and add them using the direct add icon described above.

External Contacts

To add an external user, use the right hand side of the form and click on the add icon. You will be able to add more details for that contact later on, once it has been added to the list of contacts, as described below.

Modifying Contacts

You can at all time modify contacts by clicking on the pen icon that shows up to the right of their picture when hoovering with the mouse. Similarly to when you add contacts, there are two types of contacts that you should consider and editing them is slightly different:
  1. myJoice users have already described most of their profile details themselves, so you will only be able to change their privileges.
  2. External contacts have not gone through this process and you will have to provide all the necessary details yourself instead.

myJoice users, other Joicers

Existing myJoice users have already entered and chosen all their details, so you will only be able to change their privileges using the icon circled in red. Making a Joice user privileged means that this user will be able to place calls to the JoiceKit user without the intervention of the JoiceKit user, i.e. calls from a privileged users are always automatically accepted by the JoiceKit.

If you want to make a contact privileged, i.e. make sure the incoming calls from that contact to the Joicer will automatically be answered, click on the calling rights icon at the bottom right of the web page, then marked the privileged caller tickbox and save your settings, as shown above.

External users

By definition, external users have not entered all their details. Use add number to add a number at the end of the escalation list of a given user. Numbers can be edited, modified and their order changed using the icons that appear under their representation when hoovering with the mouse. Contact details such as an address or a picture can also be changed.

Support and Settings

The last part of the site is about assessing the well-functioning of the JoiceKit from a remote location and modifying a number of settings that will dictate the behaviour of a box. The main page presents a check up of the JoiceKit, establishing how well its different components and peripherals are working.

The main Support and Settings page shows a summary of the JoiceKit well-functioning. Icons will turn green as soon as the JoiceKit believes that a given device or vital component is working properly.
At the bottom of the main support page, there are two links from which you can access the Web pages where you can modify the behaviour of a box. Since you might have several boxes coupled to a given account, some settings are per-box settings, while other are valid for all your boxes and depend only on your account.

In language and video settings, you can change the language of the Joice user interface on the TV, as well as how video calls are handled.

In JoiceKit settings, you can modify a number of other settings, among them TV and output layout settings.

You can modify a number of volume settings for the box by clicking on the volume settings icon at the bottom left of the web page. Be sure to save your settings once you have made your choice, these will be automatically forwarded to the box as soon as possible.
