JoiceKit Installation Guide

Preliminary Information

Before you get started make sure that these items are included in your JoiceKit package:

  • JoiceBox
  • BlackBox
  • USB Camera
  • Antenna
  • Two Power Adaptors
  • SCART cable

Also make sure you have:

  • Internet Connection
  • Subscription for myJoice
Start by checking that you have an Internet connection that works properly. If it is a new subscription, you should have received instructions for how to get it up and running from your ISP. The BlackBox can be connected to the internet via a network cable or a wireless connection (WLAN or WiFi). Since WiFi is subject to interferences from other radio devices, we recommend connection using a network cable for best results.

Connecting Up

Please connect your JoiceKit in the order shown below.

  1. Insert the network cable or attach the WiFi antenna, depending on whether a wired or wireless network connection will be used.
  2. Plug in the SCART cable (the cable with the wide connectors at the end) to the socket at the back of the BlackBox (the one circled in white) and connect the other end to the TV
If you already have a device connected to the TV's SCART input, disconnect it and plug it in the Black Box's right hand SCART socket (the one not circled in white)            .
  3. Plug the camera into the BlackBox and place it on top of the TV. Position it to so that it faces where the user will normally sit.
  4. Plug the power adapter into the BlackBox. If your package came with two different adapters, plug the bigger one marked 500mA into the BlackBox.
  5. Plug in the power adapter at the bottom of the tabletop unit. Find a position for the tabletop that makes it easy to reach from the natural place of conversation. If your package came with two different adapters, plug the smaller one into the JoiceBox.

At this point, the tabletop unit lights will flash on and off for a few minutes and then the picture above should appear on the TV screen. This screen is shown whenever the JoiceKit starts. Note that the BlackBox takes noticeable time to start, so be patient until the wait animation has ended and until the carousel has appeared.

If you cannot see any picture on the TV:
  • If the BlackBox has a central green light on and the flashing lights on the tabletop have stopped then try manually switching your TV between the different AV inputs until you see the picture. Please make sure your TV set is on.
  • If either the BlackBox is not showing a steady green light or if the tabletop lights continue to flash, then please check all connections and power units.

Initial Setup

The first time your BlackBox is started, an installation wizard will automatically be run. The purpose of this wizard is to adapt your JoiceKit to its technological environment (network, TV, etc.). The wizard is divided into seven steps of varying length and it takes 15-30 minutes to complete. In the wizard, you will be able to navigate among the active elements on the screen using the arrows and select using the green button on the JoiceBox. The element in focus and selected when pressing the green button will always be shown in green. The seven steps of the wizard are always shown at the left of the screen and you can always return to a step that you already have completed by pressing the left arrow and then up and down. At any time, pressing the right arrow will automatically highlight the help which will appear after a few seconds of inactivity.

Language Selection

The first step of the wizard consists of selecting the language that you will be using throughout the installation wizard and the first time you will be using your JoiceKit to place and receive calls. The language for the regular TV user interface can be changed at any time via the web interface of your JoiceKit.

Select the language to use throughout the wizard using the up and down keys on your JoiceBox. This will also be the language that you will use on the regular TV interface later on.

Network Selection

The second step of the wizard consists of selecting the network that it will be using. The JoiceKit starts by automatically trying to connect to a wired network. If a connection is made, a screen will confirm that you are connected together with the IP address that you have acquired. If there is no wired network connection available or no cable plugged in, you can scan for available WiFi networks. You may need to input a WEP key or WPA password to connect to a wireless network. Use the available on screen keyboard and navigate using the arrow buttons on your JoiceBox.

When scanning for WiFi networks, you will be able to select the network to which the box should connect. Each discovered network is identified by its name. The reception level is shown at the right of each network name and encrypted networks are marked with a lock at the left of their names. If you are unsure about which network you should connect to, it is probably the one that has the strongest reception level.

Update

Your JoiceKit will periodically check for upgrades to its software at night time. myJoice provides you with these upgrades free of charge. In order to benefit from all improvements to the software since the JoiceKit was manufactured, the next step of the wizard consists of checking whether a new version is available. If an update is available, the BlackBox will download the new version, install it automatically and restart itself to install the new version. Be patient with the process and the progress.

The BlackBox will automatically download a new version of the software if it is available and show a progress bar that will grow at the pace data arrives at the BlackBox. Progress is dependent on the quality of your Internet connection, the progress bar might pause for a while before continuing again.

Do not unplug the BlackBox until it has restarted and the result of the update is shown to you. If the update did not properly work because of problems with the network connection, for example, the box will continue with the manufacture version of the software. It will continue checking for updates periodically as explained above.

Upon successfull update, you should see a screen as above, though with a different version number, i.e. the actual latest version of the software.

Registration

You should have received an email from myJoice with a box user name and password, alternatively this was handed over to you as part of the JoiceKit package. The password is fairly long and uses both numbers (0-9) and letters (a-f), upper and lower case are important and you should respect the casing. In order to access the myJoice service and make calls you need to input your user name and password using the on screen keyboard and navigating using the buttons indicated.

Click on the green button to make the virtual keyboard appear so as to input the user name and password that should be associated to the JoiceKit. Once these have been answered, choose "register" and the BlackBox will check your credentials within our service.

Upon successfull registration, you will be taken to an audio section that simply reminds you about where volumes can be controlled, i.e. along the side of the JoiceBox and via your Web account.

TV section

Your JoiceKit can be taught to wake up your TV on incoming calls and/or to interrupt TV watching on incoming calls. For this to work properly, you will always have to leave your TV in standby mode. If you wish to power off your TV set, you will have to manually switch on your TV on incoming calls.

There are many different manufacturers of TV sets and many different models. Your JoiceKit will do its best to learn about the particularities of just your TV, but we cannot guarantee to support all existing models and brands. Technically speaking, TV control is achieved by a combination of SCART signalling and emulation of remote control key presses. The infrared signals emulating key presses on the remote control will be sent from the front side of your JoiceBox. This means that you should have, at all time, an approximate free line of sight between the JoiceBox and the receiver, usually placed at the bottom of your TV set.

When teaching the JoiceKit about your TV and your remote control, you will have to place the remote control close to the opening in the middle of the BlackBox. Infrared signals can bounce on different materials in your room, during the process you should make sure to avoid the signals to reach your TV set. Use your hand, for example, to make a "tunnel" between the front of your remote control and the opening at the middle of the BlackBox. If ever your key presses reach the TV infrared receiver, you will have to manually navigate in your TV menus to bring back Joice, for example by selecting the appropriate AV input. Note that the IR receiver in the middle of the BlackBox is aimed at recording a wide range of remote controls and not a regular receiver. Therefore, you will have to be very close to the BlackBox when performing the recording.

The recording process is slightly cumbersome, but this is because of the wide variety of TV brands and models. Take your time reading the instructions on screen, remember that this is a one time procedure and that once the JoiceKit has learnt about your TV you will never have to teach it again about your TV, at least until you change TV.

The first step of the TV teaching procedure is to discover which keys on your remote are able to wake your TV from standby and put it into standby. Usually these are "1" or any channel button to wake it up, and a special "power" button or similar to put it into standby. In most cases, teaching these buttons will be sufficient.

After learning how to turn the TV on and off you may have to teach the JoiceBox how to put the TV onto the input used by the JoiceBox. Most users will not need this section since most modern TVs in Europe can automatically switch to the correct input.

For some TVs, you will be requested for a sequence of key presses that guarantee to show the AV input to which the box is connected, whichever state the TV set was in prior to the sequence. Experiment with the sequence, try thinking of all cases, such as watching a DVD vs. watching TV from a digital box for example.
Note that even though we have made our best to support all brands and models, there are cases where we will not be able to control the TV as much as we would like to. This is not crucial to using Joice. Just remember to reach for your TV remote control to manually turn it on (if necessary) and changed to the appropriate AV input on incoming calls. Joice will work even in these situations.

Camera Test

The last section of the wizard is a camera test. You will see a live picture from the camera that is connected to the BlackBox. Take some time to make sure it is directed properly towards where conversations will happen (a coach, an armchair, etc.) and that this chosen location is properly in focus.

Make sure you have a good picture from the camera by focusing manually and placing it appropriately. It is in general a good idea to have the camera on top of the TV to provide for good eye-eye contact during conversations.
Once you have finished the installation wizard, you will be sent to the carousel with all your contacts. Unless you had already prepared a number of contacts in advance, you should only have one contact, called "echo". This contact is an automated contact that sends you back your voice and your video. It is wise trying calling echo at first to see if your installation of the box was successful.

Settings and Operation

The JoiceKit software is under continual development and automatic software updates will continually be sent out to your JoiceKit, this might change the appearance of your JoiceKit interface in comparison with this manual, it will never the less have the same functions. The guide supposes that a number of contacts have been added to the joice account connected to the JoiceKit user. How to add contacts is covered in the box web manual.

Placing Calls

To use the JoiceKit, best is to place the TV into standby mode at all time, and not turning it off entirely using the power button. The JoiceKit goes into standby after a while, to wake it up, press on the green (call) button. Once the button is pressed, the JoiceKit will tell the TV to show the home screen. If that did not work on you particular TV, you will have to manually switch to an AV input using the TV remote control.

Joice welcome screen with picture carousel for contacts

At the welcome screen, there are a subset of your contacts arranged in a carousel. To navigate the carousel use the left and right arrow on the JoiceBox. To call the selected contact press the green key. You can stop the calling process at any time by pressing the red key. The system will arrange to call a given contact using a number of means, via the Internet or via the regular phone system, in turns. To skip a given number, for example if you know that the person is not available at that number, press the skip (right arrow) button.

Placing a call to jon.l, note that the home number being called on the screen to the left can be skipped by pressing the right arrow if you know jon.l is not at home.

Operations during calls

To toggle your video-feed on/off during a video-call, and control if you want to be seen or not, press the video (show me) button. To chance the video interface view, toggle the avalible views by pressing the arrow keys. At any time, the red key will end the call.

During a video call, you can change views using the arrow buttons on the tabletop

When remote users have decided not to be seen or have forgotten to show their video to you, their picture will be greyed out. Similarly, your picture will be greyed out, when you decide not showing your video to them (by pressing the hide me/show me button).

During a video call, when you or the remote party decides not to show your/his/her video, the video picture is greyed out.

During an audio call, you will still be able to see who you are talking to

At the end of a call, you will see a short summary before returning to the carousel

Answering calls

On incoming calls, the Joicebox will ring and it will ask the TV to show the Joice screen. You can accept or reject the call, with, respectively, the green or red button. Some contacts might be privileged contacts, in which case, the Joice-kit will automatically accept their incoming calls.

On incoming calls, you will see who is calling and you can then choose to accept or reject the call.

Standby mode

The JoiceKit automatically returns to standby mode after a short period of time, you can then return to ordinary broadcast.  Before returning to standby, it displays a countdown-message that you can skip by pressing the red button, or return to the carousel by pressing the green button.

Diagnostics and Settings

If at some point you need to go back to the Settings screens to make some changes, press and hold for 5 or more seconds the button at the rear of your JoiceBox (near the WiFi antenna socket). The screen below will appear and you can choose settings using the left and right arrow keys and pressing the green key when the settings icon is in focus.

Since you have already run the installation wizard, once in the installation settings screens, you will be able to bypass a number of section by navigating to the menu to the left using the left arrow and down or up to the section that is of interest to you.
