myJoice Phone Manual

myJoice Phone is the name of the PC client that you will be using to communicate with your family and JoiceKit owners. myJoice Phone is a so-called softphone, i.e. a software telephone. In addition to handle voice as a normal telephone, myJoice Phone is able to handle video. You will be able to install the software on as many computers as you need. For ease of use, we suggest that you install it on a laptop computer or a netbook. When somebody wants to join you and calls you, all running instances of the software that are connected to your account will be calling at the same time and you will be establishing a connection from the computer at which you answer.

Requirements

To run myJoice Phone, you should have a modern with a webcam. At present, we do not have strict requirements when it comes to memory and CPU, and any computer that is a few years old should work. We strongly suggest that you spend extra money on buying a good web camera since the quality of the camera will condition how good picture of you the other party will receive during calls. When you call a JoiceKit, your picture is typically shown in full screen and good cameras will deliver better pictures and better details. Note that many laptops and netbooks have an integrated camera at the top of their screen. This camera is usually rather poor.

If you buy a camera for the sole purpose of using myJoice, ensure that you have properly installed the camera drivers and that the camera is properly running before running the installer for your softphone. Note that many cameras require that you restart your computer during the installation process, if you skip that process you might encounter unecessary problems.

Installation

To install your softphone, you need to login onto your softphone account on our web site at https://settings.myjoice.com/ and download your installer as explained in the softphone web manual. The reason for having to login onto our settings sites is that your identity is inserted in the installer that you will be downloading, so that you will have to make as few modifications to the softphone settings as possible. Usually, you should be able to install the softphone as detailed below in this manual and run it without any modifications before placing your first call.

If you are installing on a previous version of myJoice Phone, we suggest that you keep installing in the same directory as the prior version. It is wiser to install on top of a prior version instead of uninstalling before installing a new version. Indeed, the installer will preserve all your contacts will the uninstaller will completely remove myJoice Phone, including your contacts.

The installer will start by asking you whether you really want to install myJoice Phone. Take time checking a second time that you have a working web camera.

We are continuously improving myJoice Phone and the software is checking for available upgrades each time it is started. It is safe to install a new version on top of an old version. The version number is shown as the first step of the installer, check that this version is greater than the one you have on your computer, in case you are upgrading. When ready, choose "next".

myJoice Phone is a specialised version of linphone, an open source softphone distributed under the terms of the GPL. Please take good time to read the license agreement, accept these as shown above and then choose "Yes".

You might want to change from the default installation folder, in which case you would choose a new folder by clicking on "browse...". If you are upgrading from a prior version of linphone, we suggest installing the new version into the same directory as the prior version so that further uninstalls will work better.

Review one last time where myJoice phone will be installed and then choose "next".

Wait then as long as the progress bar shows you files that are being installed on your hard drive.

Before finishing the wizard, take time to review the options that are presented to you (framed in red in the picture above). Make sure your web camera is connected and works properly, then you can safely launch myJoice Phone at once since your identity was part of the installer and since the installer already contains most necessary settings for it to run properly.

The installer will ensure myJoice Phone is started as soon as you login onto your computer. This way you are sure that you will never miss a call from your friends, family or relative.

Using myJoice Phone

First test run

The major part of myJoice Phone user interface is a contact list. The first time you install myJoice Phone, this list should contain a single contact, namely the Echo Service. myJoice Phone uses a floating video window, i.e. a video window that is separate from the main window. Make sure that you are seeing yourself or at least a live picture from the camera in the floating window entitled "myJoice Phone video".

The first time myJoice Phone is run, it should contain a single contact called "Echo Service" as shown above.

If you can see yourself and have a working Internet connection, try calling the echo service by double clicking on the "Echo Service" contact in the contact list. The echo service sends you back all your voice and video traffic as an audio and video mirror. In other words, you should be hearing and seeing yourself twice, as shown below. In the bottom right corner is your local video, the rest of the window is occupied by the picture coming from the remote party, which in this particular case is you.

When calling the echo service, you will see yourself twice. In the corner, as highlighted in red in the picture above, is your local picture. The remaining of the window is occupied by the picture as seen by the server, i.e. you, once again, but mirrored.

The User Interface in a nutshell

myJoice Phone has a floating video window, but you will be operating mostly on the main window for placing calls or for adding contacts. Clicking on the close button in the main window will not end the application, instead it will send it to the tray, i.e. the zone directly to the left of the clock in the bottom left corner of the Windows user interface. You can be contacted at any time, therefore, you should keep the application running at all times. Consequently, the close button is interpreted mostly as a way to hide both windows of myJoice Phone until you need to place a call or until you receive a call.

The user interface of myJoice Phone is divided into four different zones. At the top of the window, a menu can be used to access settings, quit the application or performed operations that are less frequent. Directly under the menu, are the menu to start/end a call and a field to manually enter the name of a remote party to call. This field will automatically fill up when you choose a contact to call or when a friend is calling you. Under is the contact list, with a "lookup" field to search among your known contacts, i.e. to search for contacts within the contact list. Finally, at the bottom of the window, you should find a status bar with transient information about the status of the application.

Placing Calls

The quickest way to place calls is to look for a contact in the contact list and double click on that contact. If you have tested to call the echo service, you have already exercised this function. Alternatively, you can also enter the username of a contact in the contact field and press enter or click on the telephone icon. Finding your contact can be a lengthy operation and it can take several noticeable seconds before you hear a ringback tone. When you hear that ringback tone, you are guaranteed that the softphone or JoiceKit at the other end is ringing and will then have to wait for your party to answer or decline the call.

Adding Contacts

Directly

Proceed as explained below if you want to add a contact whom Joice username you know of. If you do not know the exact username of the contact, the next section explains how to search for contacts. Note that some contacts might wish to be hidden from searches. For these contacts, you will have to proceed as explained here.

To add a contact, start by right clicking in the contact list and choose the "add" option from the menu that is highlighted in red in the picture above. Fill in the details for the contact in the window that appears when choosing add. The name should be whatever you find suitable to associate to that contact, a nickname, his/her name, etc. The SIP address should be the username of that contact at Joice. Clicking on the OK button will then add that contact to the list of known contacts.

Indirectly, via the myJoice directory

The easiest way to add contacts is to search for them within the myJoice directory. Proceed as explained below to look for and add new contacts from the directory. Note that some contacts might wish to be hidden from searches for privacy reasons and will thus not be found during searches.

To add a contact, right click in the contact list and choose the "add new contact from myJoice directory" option from the menu. As shown above, a new window will pop up and you will be able to type the name of the contact that you wish to search. All users that match the search string will appear in the search result list below. Search is automatic you do not need to click on any button to explicitely search.

Some advice for better calls

Audio

To improve audio quality and especially reduce echo, we suggest you use a headset instead of the microphone builtin your camera or computer and the computer speakers or speakers connected to the computer. If you opted for this route, you should also not be using echo cancellation and tick away that option from the preferences window, multimedia settings tab.

Video

As explained in the introduction to this manual and in general, the more expensive a camera is, the better it is. What plays significant role to good picture quality during calls is not the number of pixels a camera is able to handle, but rather its optics and its ability to adapt to varying light conditions (from sunny environments to dark rooms at night).
