Quickstart guide for the family

Congratulations! You have just bought a Joice for an elderly in your family. This document will guide you through the necessary steps so that all family members will be able to communicate with the new proud Joice owner. This guide is not a step-by-step guide, but rather a document that will provide you with the "big picture", helping you putting all the bits and pieces together. If you have bought a JoiceKit for yourself, all information in this document is still valid, except that you proably only need one account, i.e. your JoiceKit account.

Concepts, Users and Accounts

The JoiceKit that you have just purchased is meant to be connected to a TV set and to a broadband connection. An account will be associated to this JoiceKit. The JoiceKit is a communication device. Alone it would be useless! Consequently, you should have a number of softphone accounts, one for each member of your family who you want to be able to communicate with the JoiceKit. A softphone is a software telephone that can be installed on a PC (or Mac). As it is likely that you have bought the JoiceKit for somebody else, you will also have to have a softphone account for yourself. All these accounts can be accessed on our settings web site https://settings.myjoice.com/, from anywhere and at anytime.

In summary you should make sure that you have:
  • One JoiceKit, together with one account for your elderly relative.
  • One softphone account for yourself.
  • One softphone account for each member of your family who you wish will be able to communicate with your elderly relative.
All accounts are identified by a username, are protected by a password and are associated to an email address. Since email addresses are used for password recovery, we advise you to think for a few seconds about which names and email addresses you should associate to these accounts.
  • The JoiceKit account should probably be associated to a username based on the name of your elderly relative. However, since you will be administrating this account yourself (or together with some other members of your family), it is wise to associate an email address that you own or have control over.
  • For all other softphone accounts, they should be associated to a username based on the name of the family member that will be running the software. The email address should be an address that this person has control over.

Putting it together

Initiate your softphone account

Start by initiating your softphone account and downloading your software client. Follow these simple steps:
  1. Login onto our web site.
  2. Fill in your profile details: address, picture and call forwarding chain.
  3. Download your own personalised softphone.
  4. Install your PC client.
  5. Try calling the echo service to make sure everything works.
  6. Add all relevant contacts to your softphone contact list, i.e. the username for the JoiceKit and all usernames for all family members who will have a softphone themselves. That way you will be able to use the software to call for free.
Now, you should be acquainted to how the login procedure looks like on the web, how to change settings for your web accounts and how to make calls from your softphone. Note that softphones are only loosely coupled to the web site. You have probably noticed this since you had to fill in the contact list in the softphone application itself. The JoiceKit is more tightly coupled to the web site and all settings, including the address book, will be handled on the web.

Initiate the JoiceKit account

Since you are already in front of a computer, you can continue by initiating the JoiceKit account. Follow these simple steps:
  1. Login onto our web site.
  2. Follow the first time wizard, Be sure to fill in an appropriate email address, i.e. the email address of the person (or group of persons) who will be administering the JoiceKit. You can always run the wizard manually if you missed it.
  3. Add all relevant contacts to the JoiceKit, you should now be able to search for all relevant family members as long as they have not hidden themselves from searches.
  4. If necessary, make some of these contacts priviledged.
You have just made the necessary settings so that the JoiceKit will be ready to use as soon as it is installed and run.

Install and run the JoiceKit

Since you already have made a number of settings and already add contacts to the JoiceKit address book, you should be in a position to install the JoiceKit and test it in its final environment. Follow these steps:
  1. Make sure the broadband connection at the JoiceKit location is working properly. Install the modem and/or router if necessary.
  2. Connect the JoiceKit to itsTV and broadband.
  3. Run through the installation wizard if necessary.
  4. Try calling the echo service to make sure everything works.
  5. If the JoiceKit had already be initialised for you, you should consider to re-run the wizard to teach the JoiceKit about the TV it is connected to for better operation.

Initiate all other softphone accounts

Make sure the remaining of your family gets login details for their softphone accounts. Ask them to follow the steps that you took to initiate your softphone account and install you softphone.
