There are few settings that control how you choose to be shown for other Joice users, be they JoiceKit users or softphone (PC) users. These are controlled
from a web sitethat you can access at any time, from
wherever you are in order to make necessary modifications. Roughly speaking, these settings are your profile details and ways to control how visible you are to other users. Settings are
automatically propagated to JoiceKit owners whenever relevant, usually as soon as they are made.
There are two different types of web interfaces: the richer one is
meant for controlling the settings of JoiceKit users, i.e. elderly
relatives, while the simpler one is meant to controlling the settings
for softphone (PC and Mac) users. JoiceKit users have a yellow background, softphone users have a
blue-grey background, so that it should always be easy to make the
difference and know which type of user you are handling. Typically,
there are very few settings for softphone users and you will change these very
seldom. There are more settings for JoiceKit users, so you are likely
to modify these a bit more often.
This document gives an overview of what settings are available for softphone (PC and Mac) users and how to use the web site.
In a number of screenshots, red rectangles and red circles are used to
highlight zones of interest on the screen. These focus zones are not
part of the web site, they are part of the manual. At any time, when
using the web site, hoovering with your mouse on top of fields and
buttons will provide you with contextual help.
Logging in
You can access the settings on the web site at all times and from all
computers with access to Internet and a browser, at the following
address: https://settings.myjoice.com/.
You will be welcomed by the following screen (picture below). Enter
your username (usually in the form <firstname>.<lastname>.pc,
with only English characters) and your web password. Note that names and
password are case sensitive! Click on the "login" arrow to the right.
|
|
The login screen from which
you can enter the site for controlling your settings. Enter your
username and your password in the fields marked in the picture above.
|
| |
| An error will appear if you are trying to login with the wrong username or password. |
| |
If
you
have lost your password, click on "lost your password" on the main
login page and enter
your user name as shown above. A new password will be sent to the email
address that
you associated to the account. For security reasons, the email address
is never shown. Contact us if you cannot remember which email address
you associated to the account or if you do not have access to that
account anymore.
|
Once you have
logged into the site, you will be kept logged in from the computer and
browser that you have used for a long period of time. This means that you will have to pay
particular attention to logging off the site if you wanted to access
and modify the settings from an insecure machine, such as from another
place, a computer you borrow or an Internet café.
The
first time you log in onto the site, you might be requested to change
the temporary password that was sent to you to something more sensible
and something that you might remember better.
| |
| On
password recovery or the first time you login, you will be requested to
enter a new password. Try picking a strong password as explained below.
To the right, there is a password strength meter that will dynamically
reflect how good a password you are choosing. |
A strong password
is a password that meets the following guidelines. While it is not
always possible to follow all these rules, try to apply them to your
best in order to increase security.
-
Contain both uppercase and lowercase letters.
-
Contain numbers.
-
Contain symbols, such as ` ! " ? $ ? % ^ & * ( ) _ - + = { [ } ] : ; @ ' ~ # | \ < , > . ? /
- Not resemble any of your previous passwords.
-
Not be your name, your friend's or family member's name, or your login.
-
Not be a dictionary word or common name.
It
is never a good idea to use the same password for all sites and
computers that you use, or for groups of such. If you have a hard time
remembering all your passwords, consider taking notes or storing them
using software like
password safe, perhaps in combination with a USB memory stick or similar.
First time login
Every time you login, you will be welcome by the profile edition hub, where from you can make all necessary modifications to your account. We advise you to fill in your
contact details,
upload a picture of yourself and make sure to
setup a call forwarding chain. Once you have performed these steps, you should be able to download a copy of your PC client if you are running on Windows and install it.
|
As opposed to the web site that controls box settings, the web site controlling softphone accounts has few options that are all available from the main profile screen.
|
Contact Information
Start by entering your contact information by clicking on the "personal details" icon in the profile main screen.
|
| On
the first screen of profile editor, be sure to set a nickname. Your
nickname will be shown to other JoiceKit and PC users in various
places, for example in their address book on the TV screen or when
searching for existing contacts. |
|
| To
set an address is important since it will help other users of the
system to differentiate people with similar names when looking for you
or adding you to their contacts. |
Uploading an image
Associating an image to your account is important since this is the image that JoiceKit users that have chosen to have yourself in their contacts will see. You will either be able to upload an image of yourself from your harddrive, or choose an image from our picture gallery.
|
Click on the "Upload picture" link higlighted above to start uploading an image or choosing an image from our gallery.
|
|
| The
image will be seen by other Joicers that have added you to your
contacts. You choose the picture from a location on your hard drive
using the "browse" button. If you do not have a picture at hand, you
can pick one from our gallery. |
Settings and Password Change
If you want to change your login password, change the language for the site or hide yourself from searches, you should click on the "settings" icon from the main profile page.
|
| You can change your settings from the page shown above. You can hide yourself from
searches so that other users of the Joice system will not be able to
search for your name to add you to their contacts. Note that they will
still be able to add you to their list of contacts if
they know your exact user name. |
|
| To change your password, click first on the circled "change password" icon, then enter your current password and your new password twice. Try picking a strong password as explained in the logging in section. To
the right, there is a password strength meter that will dynamically
reflect how good a password you are choosing. |
Escalation and Call Forwarding
Apart
from a few details such as an address and a name, Joice contacts are particular in the sense that they are not represented
by a single or loose set of telephone numbers, rather they are
represented by a
chain of telephone numbers and Internet
softphone addresses. This chain is called the escalation list and can be thought of as a call forwarding chain. The idea
is that when trying to contact a given person, a JoiceKit will first
try to contact the person at a known Internet softphone address (to
benefit from video facilities, among other things) but will then
contact a number of other telephone numbers, in order, to try getting
in touch with that person. The system takes care of all redirections
itself, for maximum user experience.
In addition to this chain
of calls, you can tag numbers with a so-called type to make them more
recognisable. Types are free-form text, which will enable you to
describe numbers by their description and location, such as summerhouse
or cottage.
To describe how JoiceKit users will be contacting you and which telephone numbers they will use for that purpose, in addition to your softphone address, click on the "inbound call settings" in the main profile page.
|
The escalation page displays the different numbers that will be used by JoiceKit users when trying to contact you. This is a chain of numbers that you can navigate with the arrow keys to the left and right of the chain and/or the scroll wheel on your mouse. Hoovering on a number with the mouse pointer on a number will display the full number.
|
|
When hoovering with the mouse on top of a number, four icons will appear under the number. These can, respectively from left to right, be used to edit number details, move the number to the left and to the right in the escalation chain and delete the number from the chain.
|
|
When clicking on the edit (pen) icon under a number, an overlay will appear so that you will be able to enter the details for that number. At the top of the overlay, you should find the same icons as under the number in the chain, so as to move the number in the chain or delete it quicker. Be sure to enter a freetext type for the number, this will be shown on the JoiceKit screen when calling you.
|
|
To add a new number to the chain, click on the circled "add number" icon and make sure to fill in a phone number and a type in the fields framed by a rectangle in the picture above. Do not forget to click on save when you are done.

Softphone Installation and Information
The BlackBox and the softphone communicate using an open standard called SIP. SIP is the standard behind the VoIP industry. This is a long term investment as a customer and guarantees that you will still be able to use your boxes in the future.
Mac OSX
Currently, if own a Mac, you need to run a separate client called EyeBeam. EyeBeam has a wide range of settings and making sure these settings are appropriate for our server is covered in the Mac client manual. However, you will need information about our SIP servers and your SIP password. This information is always available as explained below. You will have to copy these crucial pieces of information into your EyeBeam settings before being able to call other softphones and boxes.
|
To access the pieces of information that you should manually insert into your EyeBeam settings, start by clicking on the circled "SoftPhone Information" on the main profile page. An overlay will appear with all necessary information, as highlighted in the red rectangle in the picture above.
|
Windows PC
If you own a windows PC, our service will be able to create an installer just for you, with all these settings already made for you in the installer. Windows users will use another client, a branded version of the open source client called
linphone. To download your own client, do as follows.
|
To download your PC client, start by accessing the download page by clicking either on the download icon or on the download link on the main profile page. These are marked in red in the picture above.
|
|
Your first step is to prepare an installer for just your PC client. Start by clicking on the icon framed in red in the picture above.
|
|
Preparing an installer for your client might take some time, you should see an animation as shown on the picture above while the installer is being created.
|
|
Once your installer is ready, the overlay which appeared while you were waiting should disappear and the download icon turn to green, with the text standing "Download ready, click here". Click on the download icon or text to download your installer and save it to your hard drive. Once done, you should be start the installer and install the PC client. The client will automatically be started at the end of the installation process. For more information about the installation and usage of the PC client, consult our PC client manual.
|
Once you have installed your PC clients, all your settings will be automatically setup and you will only have to fill in the contact list on the PC client with relatives and JoiceKit owners.
